Desmond Dekker – The Israelites
Voor we hem vergeten …
… Desmond Dekker is al vier-en-een-half jaar dood. Zijn nog alom bekende “The Israelites” was de eerste nummer 1 reggaehit in o.a. de Nederlandse en Engelse hitlijsten.
Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir,
so that every mouth can be fed.
Poor me, the Israelites. Aah.
My wife and my kids, they are packed up and leave me.
Darling, she said, I was yours to be seen.
Shirt them a-tear up, trousers are gone.
I don’t want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde.
After a storm there must be a calm.
They catch me in the farm. You sound the alarm.
Poor me, the Israelite.
I wonder who I’m working for.
Poor me, Israelite,
I look a-down and out, sir.
Naast The Israelites had Desmond Dekker nog 2 internationale hits:
– 007 (Shanty Town) (1967)
– (Ah) It Mek (1969)
JAH MAN!

De link naar ‘dood’ verwijst naar zichzelf. Dat moet denk ik zijn: /2006/05/26/desmond-dekker/
