Hij kreeg precies 16 jaar geleden de medal of honour voor zijn heldendaad in 1918 na een erg laffe actie van de Duitsers (zie hieronder). Het late tijdstip van uitreiken had zeer waarschijnlijk te maken met het feit dat Freddie chocoladekleurig was – hij zat ook in een zwart regiment.
